Thursday Pre-Conference Workshop: Enacting a Justice-centered Language Curriculum

Thursday, November 2, 2023

10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.

Social justice (SJ)-centered pedagogies seek to enact equitable, anti-discriminatory, inclusive, and liberating curricular and instructional practices. While language educators may agree that those are all worthwhile endeavors, there remain unique challenges and misconceptions regarding how a SJ-centered curriculum might be enacted in the language classroom specifically. This workshop seeks to demystify the process and offer concrete theoretical and practical considerations for engaging language learners in the SJ-centered classroom. The presenter will share resources and ideas for planning, implementing, and assessing learning experiences at a variety of proficiency levels. Participants will leave with a better understanding of how social justice learning goals and activities can be effectively embedded into their existing curricula.

Additional Fee – $50 for members, $60 for non-members

Pre-Registration Required. Registration cost includes lunch, served on site.

Presenter:

LJ Randolph, Assistant Professor of World Language Education – University of Wisconsin-Madison and President-Elect of ACTFL

Through inspiring stories and practical insights, she will guide the WAFLT community to rise above adversity, reflect on their teaching journey, and reimagine education in innovative ways. Drawing from her 12 years of experience as a dynamic language educator, Annabelle empowers you to embrace change, find strength in your adaptability, and bring new perspective to setbacks to turn them into opportunities for growth.
