Discover Languages – At Your School!
Student Collaboration:
- Pair high school students with elementary students to stimulate their interest in languages by teaching them songs, vocabulary, and other language opportunities.
- High schools students make posters/videos promoting languages to show to 8th graders prior to high school registration.
- Have upper-class high school students meet with freshmen to encourage them about continuing languages and offer assistance or tutoring.
- Share information with parents about what their children are learning in their language classes: projects, presentations, portfolios, videos.
Articulation:
- Host planning meetings with everyone who teaches languages and cultures in the district, including English and Social Studies teachers, and discuss the creation of a district-wide global literacy policy.
- Make appointments with local and district administrators to share information about the importance and relevance of language study. Provide handouts or prepared “talking points”.
Outreach:
- Create language clubs, culture clubs, exchange programs, language honor societies, community connections, and other opportunities to promote languages.
- Make announcements in target languages for the entire school.
- Take advantage of public relations opportunities.

Culture Connections:
- Collaborate with local service organizations to organize culture/language events and feature local language-learning opportunities.
- Community Celebration of Languages fair, parade, poster contests, bazaar, etc.
- Invite the public into the schools to observe or help present traditional festivities (Christmas Around the World, Celebrate Diversity Week, Día de los Muertos, etc.)
- Dialog with community members interested in learning languages and offer community language classes.
- Find out and publish how many and what languages are spoken in family’s homes throughout the district.
Business Connections:
- Invite local businesses to talk about the importance of languages in their businesses.
- Survey local businesses about their international dealings and publish the results in local papers.
- Make use of business and education partnerships.
Local Media:
- Contact local TV and radio stations to run interviews about school/community events.
- Be visible; always contact local news with pictures and articles about things happening in the language classroom.
